About the Calbayog Journal The Calbayog Journal covers Philippine national and local news for a Filipino readership. Our reporting is grounded in verified, attributable sourcing from official agencies and primary documents, delivered in a formal, authoritative voice. The Role We are looking for a freelance News Writer to produce accurate, well-sourced news articles on a per-article basis. Assignments may cover breaking news, weather and disaster bulletins, government advisories, public safety, and national developments. Work is remote; writers research through digital platforms and file to the editor for review. Responsibilities - Write clear, factual news articles following the Journal's house style and editorial standards - Attribute every factual claim to a named, verifiable source (e.g., PAGASA, PNP, NGCP, PCO, and other official government agencies) - Monitor official bulletins and advisories for developing stories - Meet deadlines, particularly for breaking and time-sensitive coverage - Revise articles promptly based on editor feedback - Flag unverified, contested, or single-source claims rather than publishing them as fact Qualifications - Strong news writing skills in English; Filipino language proficiency is an advantage - Solid grasp of journalism fundamentals: attribution, accuracy, fairness, and verification - Familiarity with AP style, particularly number rules - Awareness of Philippine media law and ethics, including the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act (Republic Act No. 9344) as it applies to identifying minors - Ability to work independently and respond quickly to breaking news - Prior bylines or published work preferred; new writers with strong samples are welcome to apply Compensation - Paid per published article - Rates may vary by article length, complexity, and urgency - No minimum or maximum article commitment; assignments offered based on availability and performance How to Apply Send the following to editor@calbayogjournal.com with the subject line "News Writer Application – [Your Name]": A brief cover letter Your resume or CV Two to three writing samples or links to published work *Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.
