About the role
About the Calbayog Journal
The Calbayog Journal covers Philippine national and local news for a Filipino readership. Our reporting is grounded in verified, attributable sourcing from official agencies and primary documents, delivered in a formal, authoritative voice.
The Role
We are looking for a freelance News Writer to produce accurate, well-sourced news articles on a per-article basis. Assignments may cover breaking news, weather and disaster bulletins, government advisories, public safety, and national developments. Work is remote; writers research through digital platforms and file to the editor for review.
Responsibilities
- Write clear, factual news articles following the Journal's house style and editorial standards
- Attribute every factual claim to a named, verifiable source (e.g., PAGASA, PNP, NGCP, PCO, and other official government agencies)
- Monitor official bulletins and advisories for developing stories
- Meet deadlines, particularly for breaking and time-sensitive coverage
- Revise articles promptly based on editor feedback
- Flag unverified, contested, or single-source claims rather than publishing them as fact
Qualifications
- Strong news writing skills in English; Filipino language proficiency is an advantage
- Solid grasp of journalism fundamentals: attribution, accuracy, fairness, and verification
- Familiarity with AP style, particularly number rules
- Awareness of Philippine media law and ethics, including the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act (Republic Act No. 9344) as it applies to identifying minors
- Ability to work independently and respond quickly to breaking news
- Prior bylines or published work preferred; new writers with strong samples are welcome to apply
Compensation
- Paid per published article
- Rates may vary by article length, complexity, and urgency
- No minimum or maximum article commitment; assignments offered based on availability and performance
