Calbayog City

What to expect

The cathedral is a national heritage church, formally the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul and Parish of Our Lady's Nativity. Built in the shape of a cross in Baroque-Romanesque style, it carries a historical marker installed by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines in 2018, when the church marked 233 years. It's an active cathedral with regular Masses, so visit respectfully — this is a working church first and a landmark second. The city fiesta centers here every September 8, feast of the Nativity of Our Lady, closing the Hadang Festival week. A short history: Calbayog began as a settlement called Hibatang, where Jesuit missionaries established a mission station in 1599. The settlement moved upriver to avoid Moro raids, settled along the banks of the Calbayog River, and took the river's name in 1737. On April 10, 1910, Pope Pius X erected the Diocese of Calbayog — the first in the region, with jurisdiction then covering the churches of both Samar and Leyte — and Bishop Pablo Singzon consecrated the church as its cathedral under the advocation of Saints Peter and Paul in 1912.
