About this event

Opening of Calbayog City's 78th Charter Day Celebration, led by Mayor Raymund "Monmon" C. Uy.

Calbayog City opened its 78th Charter Day Celebration on September 29, 2026, at the Julio Cardinal Rosales Plaza. Mayor Raymund "Monmon" C. Uy led the opening ceremony, joined by Vice Mayor Rex M. Daguman, members of the City Council, department heads, and representatives from national agencies.

Mayor Uy paid tribute to the people and leaders who helped shape the city. He recognized Jose D. Avelino, the Calbayog-born former Senate President who began his political career as a municipal councilor of Calbayog and later served as senator for the Ninth Senatorial District of Leyte and Samar, for his role in Calbayog becoming a city. He thanked the city's previous mayors for their leadership and contributions, and said the Charter Day activities are not for city officials, but for the people of Calbayog.

Vice Mayor Daguman said the celebration recognizes Calbayog as it is today while continuing to honor its history. He highlighted the Kasalang Bayan, the Jobs Fair, and the Calle Gelera Breakfast Banchetto, which he described as a first for the city, featuring kakanin and other well-known local favorites. He said the celebration is for the Calbayognon, and expressed hope that residents will stay united, care for one another, and work together for the city's continued progress.

The Calbayog City Coral performed, and popular Waray singer Naty Biliran performed a Waray song with other local artists. A fireworks display lit up the sky above the plaza, signaling the start of the celebration. Different bands from the city also performed live.
