September 8, 2026 | Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral
The week ended where it has always ended, at the feet of Our Lady. On September 8, Calbayog City celebrated the 334th Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the city's patronal feast and the day the whole Hadang Festival builds toward.
The feast marks the birthday of Mama Mary, and for Calbayognons it is the fiesta itself: the reason for the week of street dancing, pageantry, parades, and music that came before it. Devotion to Our Lady of the Nativity in Calbayog runs deep, with the parish dating back to 1785.
Fiesta Masses were held at Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral throughout the day:
4:30 AM | Mass
6:00 AM | Mass
9:00 AM | Pontifical Mass
5:00 PM | Mass
The 9:00 AM Pontifical Mass, a Mass celebrated by a bishop with the full ceremonies of his office, stood as the center of the day's observance.
After a week of hadang, the offering was complete: the city gave its dances, its crowns, its parades, and its songs, and on the eighth day it gave its thanks.

Hadang is an ancient Visayan ritual of making offerings to spirits, for protection, healing, good fortune or a bountiful harvest. It is still performed in Calbayog by local tambalans, and it is the foundation of the city's official festival: known until 2025 as the Sarakiki-Hadang Festival, named Hadang Festival by city ordinance on 1 September 2025, and three times champion at Samar's Tandaya Festival of Festivals.
